Soft Tissue Grafting

To restore proper gum level and functionality, a soft tissue graft can be performed. This is done by either removing soft tissue from the roof of the mouth, repositioning healthy gum tissue from adjacent teeth, or by using a synthetic donor tissue graft. Soft tissue grafts are commonly used to cover recession that has left sensitive, unaesthetic tooth roots exposed. This procedure is very predictable and has a high success rate.

When the gingiva recedes, it exposes you to greater risk for infection and bacterial penetration. The root is softer than the enamel, making it more vulnerable to bacteria and plaque. This is why a soft tissue graft is used when there has been a significant amount of gum recession in a particular area.

Soft tissue grafts can be used to change the quality of tissue present around the teeth, forming a band of thick, healthy, pink gum tissue around all teeth. They can also be used to thicken the tissue around teeth and implants, allowing for a firm attachment that can prevent future recession or bacterial invasion. Soft tissue grafts are commonly used to cover recession that has left sensitive, unaesthetic tooth roots exposed. This procedure is very predictable and has a high success rate.
