Toothaches are a common experience for most people. Unfortunately, toothaches come with discomfort and irritation. Toothaches can arise from many different things, so even if you keep up optimal hygiene, you may still experience the annoyance. Although it can be a nuisance, there are ways to get relief through natural herbal remedies or pharmaceuticals.

If you plan to use herbs, you should use them in solution form. This allows the alcohol to act as a disinfectant, which will help reduce the inflammation and kill any infection if there is any. Once you have the solution, you should use roughly a teaspoon, or whatever the periodontist recommends and gently rinse your mouth out.  Once you have help it in your mouth a minute or so, you should either swallow it or spit it out.  Tinctures are natural remedies that use herbs and alcohol to reduce pain. It is best to massage the affected area and stop the pain by numbing the nerves of the tooth that is causing you so much pain.

If you prefer to use pharmaceutical medicine, another way to stop the pain is to use ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If this is your preference, a good idea is using dissolvable tablets.  Simply take the tablet and put it in your mouth, then use your tongue to hold it against your tooth.  The ibuprofen or acetaminophen will start to dissolve and work its way into your nerve and stop the pain.  This is a very effective way to stop the pain.

If you are experiencing a toothache, it is always best practice to consult with your periodontist. Most of the time, toothaches just occur and will go away. There is always a risk of a toothache being a sign or symptom of another oral issue, however, so it is a good idea to have it checked by a professional. Keep in mind that if part of the ache involves an infection, you’ll need to use antibiotics until the infection is gone.  Once the infection is gone, the dentist will be able to proceed with treatment.  Sometimes, toothaches are the result of a cavity, which will need to be filled. If you aren’t able to make it to the dentist, simply use a remedy that will give you relief from the pain until you can get to the dentist and get the problem taken care of.
